Background of the Study
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in the economic development of any nation, particularly in creating employment, fostering innovation, and contributing to GDP. However, many SMEs face challenges related to poor management, lack of expertise, and inefficiencies in operations, which often hinder their growth and success (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).
Training and capacity building have emerged as essential tools for equipping SME owners and employees with the necessary skills to address these challenges. In Adamawa State, where SMEs contribute significantly to the local economy, there is an increasing need to evaluate the impact of capacity-building initiatives on business performance and sustainability (Garba & Musa, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognition of SMEs as a critical component of economic growth in Adamawa State, many of these enterprises fail to reach their potential due to inadequate training and lack of capacity building. Business owners and managers often lack the technical and managerial skills needed to navigate complex market dynamics, resulting in stagnation or failure. Understanding the role of training in improving SME performance is crucial to developing effective support programs (Bello & Abdullahi, 2024).
